My experience was that the ones who charge for an estimate also gave a much higher price for the actual work

I charge my customers 100 just to talk to me. Then 100 more to schedule an appt. Then 100 more for the estimate. And they gotta buy me lunch

Very much depends on the industry/ type of service. Any of sort of construction/demo service, hell no, there’s a billion other companies that will offer free estimates.

my brother runs a drywall business. he does free electronic estimates via pictures but if it's in person, it's 100. and if he does the job, it goes towards his work.
