“What we seek from our courts is to say that our lives are important and that foreign governments cannot abuse and kill, execute people and not face justice for it.” Huwaida Arraf, an American-Palestinian human rights activist and lawyer, is renowned for her impactful advocacy for Palestinian rights. She co-founded the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a non-violent protest organisation committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land through direct action. Arraf's influence is not confined to the local level and has been instrumental in organising freedom flotillas to the Gaza Strip, challenging the Israeli naval blockade. Her leadership extends to legal challenges and international advocacy, aiming to hold Israel accountable for human rights violations. Her dedicated efforts bring vital attention to the struggles of the Palestinian people and inspire hope for accountability on the global stage. Huwaida Arraf was one of the speakers at a day-long conference entitled “Israel’s Influence: Good or Bad for America?” held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on March 18, 2016. In this video clip, Huwaida Arraf emphasises the significance of holding Israel accountable through the US court system in order to prevent their unrestrained actions. She references the case of Furkan Doğan, who was a US citizen and was killed on the Mavi Marmara, a civilian ship that formed part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. An autopsy showed that he had suffered five gunshot wounds at point-blank range. The UNHCR report also concluded that he was shot while lying wounded on the floor. Furkan was shot while he was recording the events on the ship. The ship was flying an American flag, leading to arguments that it was considered sovereign to the US, hence the reference to US soil in the clip. * * * * * #justice #peace #protest #flotilla #law #court
