@gardeners_pov: Up close and personal with Latrodectus sp., the infamous black widow spider. This specimen was hiding under a sheet of cardboard next to the garden. Black widow spiders have an unusually potent venom containing the neurotoxin latrotoxin, which causes the condition latrodectism, both named after the genus. Female widow spiders have unusually large venom glands, and their bite can be particularly harmful to large vertebrates, including humans. However, despite their notoriety, Latrodectus bites rarely cause death or produce serious complications. Only the bites of the females are dangerous to humans. Females are black, as in this video, whereas makes are smaller and drab brown. The spider gets its name by the behavior of eating the male after copulation, hence a widow once she bears offspring. #nature #blackwidow #spiders #venomous #deadly #creepy
