A series of numbers, letters, and dates were carved into the brickwork of a wall in Myddelton Passage (London, EC1R 1XQ) in Victorian times. According to research conducted by England Heritage, the carvings were done by bored and often drunk policeman. Each one refers to a personal collar number, followed by letters indicating their division. Many of the numbers on the wall are followed by the letter “G” to denote the Metropolitan Police’s G Division, based out of the nearby King’s Cross Police Station. The Met police were new back then (they were only founded in 1829) and they had a lot of issues with the staff being drunk on shift. Maybe that explains why they were scratching their names on walls? Perhaps, but the truth is nobody knows what started the trend, or why at some point in the 19th century, Myddelton Passage became a gallery for the graffiti of passing police. #londonlife #graffiti #londonhistory
