![Something happened in the early 2010s. Jonathan Haidt calls it a tragedy in two acts. Act one: The loss of the play-based childhood. For generations, kids learned how to navigate the world through real play, unsupervised, messy, and essential. We slowly took that away. But mental health held steady. Act two: The arrival of the phone-based childhood. Between 2010 and 2015, everything changed. Flip phones became smartphones. Social media became portable. And childhood moved to the screen. That’s when the mental health crisis began. Not overnight—but fast enough to call it a collapse. We’re not just losing attention. We’re losing resilience, relationships, and what it means to grow up.
