I have the opposite problem of sudden romance when a girl is just trying to save the world. ( they are not wars, just ancient beings who are evil and need to be destroyed/resealed)

okay recommendation "the black magician trilogy" starting with "the magicians guild" by Trudi Canavan. it's my favourite book series and really great female protagonist and it's got magic and thieves

The Bone Witch series has war-ish moments, but what I really like about it is it's like, oops, the main character who you want to love is also the villain to everyone else.
