Wow, great theory and makes complete sense. My mom was criticizing the new ao dai style that’s trending in VN right now. Our aunts in VN told us we were old fashioned to want the traditional ones we

I learned Vietnamese from my parents, and when I went to Vietnam one year and spoke to my cousins, they said my viet sounded "old fashioned" to them. I'm 27 😂

This is so interesting. I’ve noticed that when people are separated from their homeland a lot of them tend to cling to traditions as a way to not lose their connection to their culture.

My dad (who fought and was captured for 13 years) only likes Vietnamese songs pre 1975. He doesn’t listen to any songs after. I think that’s why there are so many different covers of old songs.

As a medical interpreter, this is very true. I remembered my first week being an interpreter in the US, I had to learn a lot more than I thought, and I am still have to even til this day.

My wife’s (Korean) aunt came to visit and she commented on how old fashioned the food we were eating was. Because that’s how my mother in law did it when she left Korea.

Its more like people in viet nam are reaching out to a more modern world through media and learn that new “modern” “pop” culture vs old people here dont see news abt vnam.

Not sure if its the same but, I STILL speak in an old thai dialect due 2 my grandparents. My friends from thailand always tell me, “you speak like ur from a diff ERA!” TL has so much slangs now! 🤯

See, the thing is I’m a Z with a millennial mom (not X) and we came to America at the same time when Vietnam was already developed. So there’s not much difference for us 😂😂 and I know Tran Thanh.

I've always felt the same. Anything direct from VN, the older generation tend to tell us that they're too "tay" or westernize. I always feel like an old lady in VN bc of how we were raised here. 🤣

I tell this to my mom all the time because of her trauma. and ofc she's gonna refuse to believe it. my dad however, goes back to vietnam 2-3x a year. He is very open-minded and imbraces new ideas.

Thanks for speaking on this. been thinking about this too . VN really is innovating super fast. I feel like the money and resources are bountiful in VN now, whereas US Viets don’t have that

I think this is mostly an age thing, right? People in their 50's/60's are just as traditional. people in their 20's are just as attuned to culture.

Korean American here. My TA in college best described it - you’re as Korean/Vietnamese/etc. as the time period you left your country. My parents came in the 70-80’s and their home country is (1/2)

The difference comes from our parents' generation. Those who went through the war and stayed in Vietnam, they also suffered a lot of pain caused by the war but they did not pass on hatred to the next generation, they taught about tradition but towards the future, happiness. Meanwhile, the generation of parents abroad (a part) even passed on hatred and dragged their children into the past. But the younger generation has its own thoughts and will find ways to connect with each other for a Vietnam of origin and increasingly prosperous 😍🇻🇳
