CONTEXT᭪༊ I want to make something clear before anything else. i’m not religious. i’m agnostic, and i find truth in all kinds of places. sometimes it’s in religion, sometimes philosophy, sometimes in the things we experience every day. i don’t believe you need to belong to a religion to find something meaningful within it. i love interpreting religious texts because sometimes the most interesting questions come from looking at something familiar in a completely different way. this first part is about something i’ve been questioning for a while. in some christian churches, people speak in tongues, meaning they pray using words or sounds they may not understand themselves, believing they’re speaking through the holy spirit. but that made me think about prayer itself. if god knows everything, wouldn’t he already know the things we’re too afraid to say? the people we’re scared of losing? the thoughts we keep to ourselves? jesus even says in matthew 6:8 that god knows what we need before we ask. so why have we come to associate speaking with being heard? and that led me to an even stranger thought. imagine telling someone your greatest fear. except that person already knows it. now imagine somebody else is listening, somebody who didn’t know before. now, the only thing that has changed is who has knowledge of your fears. that’s where my interpretation comes in. christianity describes god as all-knowing, but it doesn’t describe the devil that way. so i’ve wondered whether speaking our fears aloud could, in theory, reveal something that silence wouldn’t. i’m not saying the bible teaches that the devil hears every prayer or gains power from hearing our fears. it doesn’t establish that. i’m exploring the possibility and what it means to be vulnerable when we believe someone is listening. and there’s another side to this too. just because god already knows something doesn’t necessarily mean speaking it has no purpose. maybe prayer is about connection, trust or understanding ourselves rather than giving god information. but that still leaves me with a question. if god already knows the words we haven’t spoken, could silence itself be a form of prayer? IF YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW MORE᭪༊ * matthew 6:6–9: jesus discusses private prayer, warns against empty repetition and says god knows our needs before we ask. * psalm 139:1–4: describes god knowing our thoughts and words before we speak them. * romans 8:26–27: describes the spirit interceding when we don’t know how to pray, including feelings too deep for words. * 1 kings 8:39: describes god as knowing the human heart. * 1 corinthians 14:2: paul discusses tongues as speech directed toward god, not necessarily understood by others. * the meaning of omniscience: the theological belief that god knows everything. * contemplative prayer: traditions that emphasize silence, stillness and awareness rather than constant speech. i’d really love to hear how other people interpret this, especially those who have experienced speaking in tongues or prayer themselves. i’m not trying to tell anybody what they should believe. i’m trying to understand why we believe what we do.
