My biggest takeaway from Autodesk University 2026: AI may begin to free the means of production. Ideas we once only daydreamed about can increasingly come into the world. Ideas that were stopped by budget, time, team size or technical constraints suddenly become possible when intelligence itself becomes accessible as a tool. Autodesk Forma also points toward a different future for AEC: a more connected, cloud-based environment spanning workflows that today live across tools like AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks. As AI becomes embedded into that environment, I think today’s way of working could eventually feel as dated as MS-DOS. By the 2030s, I can imagine people running increasingly sophisticated businesses from phones, folding devices and tablets, directing AI agents that design, analyze, coordinate, sell and create. Some jobs will change. New jobs will emerge. But perhaps the bigger opportunity is an entirely new creator economy, built around something we have never had access to at this scale before: Intelligence as a commodity. And when intelligence becomes abundant, the barrier between having an idea and producing something gets dramatically smaller. That may be the most exciting thing I saw at AU.
