TBMs are rotated against hard rock, soil, or earth to create smooth tunnel walls, all while limiting the disturbance to the surrounding ground. TBMs are used as a less disruptive alternative to more impactful mining methods such as drilling and blasting, which makes them a lot more suitable for use in urban environments.
