@joelbervell: Recently, attacks on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the medical field have increased, reminding me of how the lack of diversity we see in medicine isn’t accidental, but purposeful. In 1910, the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education commissioned Dr. Abraham Flexner with the Carnegie Foundation to look into the “deplorable” state of medical education. Flexner visited all North American medical schools and wrote a document criticizing the education of doctors. Due to the Flexner reforms, many medical schools closed, including 5 of the 7 established to train Black people and all but one of training women. That limited opportunities to enter medicine for those in marganlized groups, until the 1960s when civil rights laws made discrimination by race and sex unlawful.  An official apology from the American Medical Association was made in 2008. And the AMA recognized racism as a public health threat. But these are examples of institutionalized discrimination that exist even in educational fields like that of medicine.
