The only space saving packing hack that worked for me is putting clothes in packing cubes and then putting them in vacuum seal bags! Makes it 10x smaller and you can bring a small manual pump with you

Not sure if this is what you did, but they fit even better if you fold your clothes to the dimensions of the bag!
