@simon.r.l: Forced Labor is a reality of modern global capitalism, but it doesn’t have to be. Governments have taken leadership roles on combatting modern slavery. Canada passed the Modern Slavery Act to combat forced labor used in goods sold in Canada. The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive holds companies accountable for forced labor on their supply chain, although this directive was severely limited in its scope. The main strategy outside of government intervention has been to work through private companies to institute “responsible business practices.” Relying on private businesses to change systems they profit off is rarely successful. These systems have often ignored the role that trade unions play in combatting trafficking and forced labor. Strong unions around the globe have been leading forces in combatting forced labor by providing workers a voice and driving the anti-forced labor, anti-modern slavery agenda at the national and local level. If you live in the United States, the Department of Labor reports on goods produced with forced labor. I’ll cover this in another video. #workerrights #labor #unions #workers #justice #capitalism #1u #workerjustice #solidarity #laborunion #strike #solidarityforever
