I have been doing this "splitting" since I was a child. It kept me safe around my parents. It naturally happened in other relationships my brain didn't see as safe

It felt like my reality was splitting, sometimes the reality was that this was very clearly abuse, and one was that we are in love and going through a “normal rough patch”. Every day it would switch

Then the splitting effect causes you to not trust yourself or what’s happening. So you then become less & less then nothing which is what an abusive partner wants

I’ve been a therapist for 9 years and you have a way of verbalizing concepts that are so complex in such a beautiful way. I appreciate it so much

i literally went to counseling once a few days after he SA’d me. while we were still in the relationship. then i went to go hang out with him that same day.

For me it was dissonance and dissociation. It’s like coming out of a fog once it’s over and it’s terrifying to see how laid back i had been about being abused.

my trauma kept me in an abusive relationship because of many reasons my inability to trust myself and seeking advice from people who were outside of that situation etc

When dealing with his toxicity, I will call out his behavior as manipulative etc. When around other people, I pretend our relationship is perfect:/

While I relate I don’t hide it and am very vocal about the unacceptable behavior. I’m a truth speaker. Eventually he always apologies and says he will work on it but another bad behavior shows up
