@makingmaddy: I was mind blown when I learned about steeking! Steeking allows you to knit the front panel of your cardigan in one piece to keep the coloring and pattern the same on each side. Cast on the amount of stitches you need for two panels and add an extra stitch. That extra stitch will be used in the middle of all your stitches for the steek. You can do that stitch a different stitch or color to make it obvious. After you've cast off, cut along that middle incorrect stitch to divide the panel in two matching panels! Note that some yarn should use a sewn/crocheted reinforcement before steeking.
