I’ve always remembered a passage from EM Forster’s ‘A Room with a View’ where they comment on a poorly written book having three split infinitives in a row!

When I was at school, my French teacher said today we are going to use the subjunctive does not exist in English, yes it does. It just isn’t used… If I were rich, I would buy a house

I believe a lot of textbook grammar like this is basically made up by scholars to create classism separating those who have been taught the rules and those who have not

It comes from Latin grammar. Bringing Latin grammar rules to bear on English grammar is a little snobbish.

I don’t like splitting infinitives, but there are times when you have to. To go boldly sounds mad, and Boldly to go sounds madder!

I read that it was because Latin infinitives are single words and thus can't be split, so it was decided that English infinitives should be treated the same way. 😕

It’s not a miss we had it. Jon didn’t was school and I mean jon didn’t was just because GROOMER changes over the years doesn’t mean it’s a mess that’s the beauty of living language changes. Not sure I agree with the use of split infinitives but there you go by the way, I’m 58 which means I wasn’t brought up in Victorian times, and and yes if I did split the infinitive, I was given six of the best that was in the 1970s, I mean children are told now that the subjunctive does not exist in English. Actually, even I was I corrected the teacher
