@ashleyjames: Do you notice that when describing a woman, the media focus on the way she is dressed or their bodies in a way that never happens to men. I’m sure you’ve all read headlines about someone ‘flaunting their cleavage’ or ‘parading their pins’ or ‘showcasing their toned torso’, even if they’re just walking down the street wearing clothes. A man could be on a beach in speedos, and his body still won’t be commented on. It encourages us all to focus on how a woman looks. Sometimes they even talk about a woman’s toned tummy even when she doesn’t have one. It makes us look at her tummy, and notice that it’s not toned. It’s click bait. And sadly looking at comment sections, it works. The problem is, is conditions us to focus on what a woman looks like. To judge her. If we always see someone flaunting cleavage then we couldn’t possibly take them seriously. And how the media talk about us is important, because it tells society that it’s acceptable to talk about us in the same way. If you haven’t read @laura_bates__ Fix the System (not the women) then I cannot recommend it enough! She talks about this in so much greater depth and it is eye opening. And when it comes to women in politics, sometimes im horrified by the way in which they are objectified and belittled. Across both parties. I remember during her leadership campaign, they chose images of Penny Mourdant in swimwear next to the men in suits. Angela Raynor being sl*t shamed for wearing skirts. There’s so many examples. Imagine having to face that every day in a position of power? With so many of our rights under threat and so many still being ignored, we desperately need more women in parliament so women’s issues are decided by women.
