@mbari_news: Mid-week moment of zen with this lobate ctenophore. 🩵💙 Ctenophores are mysterious ocean drifters found anywhere from the ocean’s edge to the deepest parts of the sea. If you look closely you’ll see that this comb jelly, Bathocyroe sp., has a red gut. This red gut conceals bioluminescent prey in its stomach which helps it avoid attracting unwanted attention from other predators nearby. ⠀ Comb jellies are beautiful gelatinous animals that live throughout the world’s ocean. They have ‘combs’ or rows of cilia, which they use to swim. Some have tentacles, some have lobes, some have neither, but all ctenophores have eight comb rows at some point in their life. Bathocyroe has lobes—which it can contract together to give itself a little pulse for movement— an additional mode of transport beyond the comb rows. #ctenophore #combjelly #ocean #deepocean #deepsea #marinebiology #oceanlife #fyp
