@theatlantic: Gen Z kids are part of a generation of guinea pigs.· “It’s as though we sent Gen Z to grow up on Mars when we gave them smartphones in the early 2010s in the largest uncontrolled experiment humanity has ever performed on its own children,” Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist, writes in “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.” How do we stop the experiment? The solution, Haidt says, is “easy.” In this episode of “Radio Atlantic,” he advocates for parents to avoid giving middle schoolers smartphones so they can reclaim the old way of socializing, for social-media platforms to raise the minimum age for use to 16, and for schools to ban cellphones during the day. Why do we keep pretending the “younger generation” is the first ever to grow up online 🙄

If you were born in 1994-1998 this is the exact timeline we all lived and we made it out okay - smartphones in high school, social media at 16

As a teacher, I promise you they all have a device where they have social media without your knowledge.

I’m sorry, did he just write a book telling us how to parent and then he didn’t do it himself?

This reminds of the quote, I was the best parent until I became one. Good for her to ask him if he’s tried it.

my parents didn’t let me have social media/a phone/cable tv & what affected me the most was how left out i felt. i resent them to this day lol it’s hard enough for kids to fit in.

We are doing a “home” phone starting in 6th grade that can be checked out for events where they needs to be without us.

lol. “Here’s my four norms and here’s how my kids found ways around each of them.”

Is there any evidence behind any of these ideas or does this just “sound reasonable”

Age is not a magical maturity marker. Every child is different and matures at their own rate. My oldest at 16 and my youngest at 16 were wildly different in maturity/readiness.

We gave ours a cell phone when he was old enough to start going places without an adult, which is 7 th grade for us. He turned out pretty well. 🥰

I deeply regret this and wish I had waited until high school (flip phone only until then). New parents take note 🙏🏻

If she’s watching tiktok in the browser…she has a tiktok account. Unless she is ONLY watching videos friends send her and not scrolling herself.

back in the 00s, I wasn't allowed to have Facebook/MySpace when it first came out until I turned 18. at the time it made me so angry, now I'm grateful my youth wasn't online.

phenomenal post— too bad that this format doesn’t get great traction on TikTok because of precisely the attention issues that stem from these issues!

Agreed 100%. I’m 27, did not get a smart phone till senior year, and social media a few years prior.

I just disagree about not having your phone in school. There were so many times where it was beneficial for me to be able to talk to my friends or parents during school hours directly w/o teachers

My daughter has an Apple Watch. She can call and text us and the friends that we add. She can’t take pictures or consume social media, but still can communicate with people. Also allows independence.
