Primary Emotions Your initial reactions to what is happening to you are called primary emotions - these feelings come on strong without thinking about it.  Examples: - You might feel angry immediately when someone cuts you off in traffic without signaling. - You might quickly feel sad when there’s a death in the family. Secondary Emotions Along with primary emotions, it’s possible to experience secondary emotions - these are emotional reactions to your primary emotions. Example: You yelled at your younger sister this morning because you swore she had borrowed some of your clothes without asking. Later, you find those clothes in your gym bag and remember putting them there last night and feeling guilty about yelling at your sister. Anger is the primary emotion. Guilt is the secondary emotion.
