I like to play the “Wake Up My Fingers” game to bring kids out of meltdown mode. Because in meltdown mode: • Survival and panic brain is ON (back of brain) • Logic and decision-making brain is OFFLINE (front of brain) Our first instinct is often to fix the issue that’s causing the meltdown or to change the behavior. But now is not the time. Think about it like this: if you were running from a bear, it would not be the moment for someone to stop you with questions, new skills, or a serious conversation. Kids feel the same way. Right now we are: • NOT fixing the reason for the meltdown • NOT offering choices • NOT disciplining or teaching a skill This is not the time. Those things can come later. In this moment, our job is simple: bring their logic brain back online and calm their nervous system. Nothing productive can happen until they are regulated. “Finger Wake Up” helps: 1. Engage the thinking brain 2. Anchor with one of the five senses , in this case, touch 3. Create co-regulation as they borrow your calm 4. Turn a power struggle into play Every child is different. Some will join in if you say, “My fingers are asleep.” Others respond to a challenge like, “Do you think you can do it?” Some need the simple reassurance, “I’m here. I can help. Do what I do.” And it doesn’t have to be this exact game. 1. Take confident control (you are safety) 2. Model calm so they can copy you without thinking too hard 3. Help pull their brain out of panic and back into logic 4. Anchor them with one of the five senses I know meltdowns can be hard, and it can feel impossible at times, especially in public when our own panic brains get triggered too. It takes practice. But the more we do it, the more natural it feels to respond in a way that helps both us and our kids. Because when we are regulating them, we are also regulating ourselves. It is okay if we do not get it right every time. I know I personally have felt much more at ease with meltdowns by accepting that meltdowns are not a failure of parenting. Let go of that guilt because it's simply not true. Everybody's kids melt down. It's just their little brains growing! #kelsewhatelse #howtotalktolittlekids
