if I know a little bit sign should I keep that to myself and let the interpreter do their job, or use the little bit of sign I know if it's appropriate?

I generally don't even look at the interpreter when speaking with my deaf coworkers. I speak to my coworkers face as I would any hearing person.

it is such a pet peeve of mine when someone talks to the interpreter and not the person and does the "can u tell them" or asks the interpreter questions for the person.

Do interpreters ever correct people in the moment? Like direct the persons attention back to the deaf consumer? Or do you let it play out?

It’s always interesting for me when I have deaf patients as I am also HOH so I end up being the one bouncing my head back and forth so I can address the patient while I’m speaking but then have 1/2

when the interpreter is asking for clarification, should the speaker direct their speech to the interpreter, or the deaf client?

I have a really unique question. As a hard of hearing person (not deaf but diagnosed HOH) would it still be rude of me to look at the interpreter as I need to lip read to help my hearing 😅

As a therapist, I've worked with ASL and Spanish interpreters. I found that if I relaxed, and focused on the client, it went really smooth.

Is it okay to give a bit of background info prior to the deaf consumer being there? Ie: 5th grade student who is studying density in science class and a description of events to happen?

Thank you!! For posting this!! I am a nurse and we often have patients have interpreters… either ASL or another non -English speaking patient. I tell my coworkers “please talk to the patient! “

I've had a deaf classmate at one point and the interpreter always made they were next to us or just behind us while talking to him. He was a cool kid too

and if you are an eye Dr. giving an eye exam, please don't ask us to stand behind the deaf person...they won't be able to see my signs from there.
