Let’s revisit UV exposure in the plane with greater detail ✈️ 2 important findings: 1️⃣ Pilots flying for 56.6 minutes at 30 000 feet in the air receive the same amount of UV-A as going in a tanning bed for 20 minutes. These levels can be even higher when flying over reflective cloud layers and snow fields. (PMID: 25517516) 2️⃣ Pilots and cabin crew have approximately 2x the incidence of melanoma compared with the general population. (PMID: 25188246; my med school classmate and previous mentor/research PI from Stanford published this paper!) So do you need to be worried about UVA exposure on the plane ✈️ These are my takeaways: ➡️ cockpit exposure is much greater than the exposure you get sitting in your airplane seat so those risks are not directly applicable to your seat. HOWEVER… ➡️ if you are sitting window seat just close your window or if you plan to keep the window open the whole time, then wear sunscreen. ➡️ wear sunscreen anyways because you had to drive to the airport right? So unless you’re flying at night you’re probably getting uv exposure at some point or other My question is who gets to determine whether the window is open or closed? Would you feel comfortable asking your neighbor to keep the window closed if you’re not sitting window? I tend to not ask…so sunscreen it is (but y’all know I wear spf every single day anyways) #skincancer #spf #sunscreen
