Eagles in a tangle of talons and feathers never gets old. It’s a common misconception to think this is a courtship ritual. This instance is not. While locking talons is part of courtship, eagles also use their talons for every other form of communication as well. A dominant female in the area didn’t want any other birds taking fish from her territory so she politely showed the intruding bird who’s boss. If you watch closely you will see that she is the one that flies away and the intruder was thrown into the muddy oyster bed below. There is so much to see in this short clip. I love how the feathers on the intruding bird’s head stand straight up as she opens her mouth in an aggressive but defensive posture immediately before impact. Their ability to fly backwards. Their grace once locked and their ability to actually let go before smashing into the ground. This epic battle didn’t stop here but I did put my camera down and watch as the dominant bird came right back and attacked once again. The second attack was enough to send the intruder packing and leave everyone who was lucky enough to see the altercation standing there trying to comprehend what had just happened.
