LISTEN TO ME… An “obedient” dog DOES NOT equal a well BEHAVED dog. Most of the time, behavior overrides obedience. Many people experience this and speak on it all the time. “My dog knows sit but…” The “but” is where instincts and or behavior patterns, feelings, assumptions take over. A dog that is afraid and trying to escape from a perceived threat will likely NOT listen to known commands. And just because you HAVE a dog that may listen to you, doesn’t mean they respect you or that you have a good relationship with them. In a lot of cases, a dog may listen only because there is a promise of food. Or they listen because they are under threat or intimidation. Neither of those reasons are a reflection of a healthy relationship. At the core of it all is your relationship. This is like an overview of how you live and interact with your dog day to day. Mutual respect is necessary here. Next is their behavior patterns. Who they are, how they feel and act in certain situations and environments. Then there is obedience. Your dog listening to you and taking direction from you. All three of the aspects intertwine with each other but You ABSOLUTELY CANNOT HAVE solid obedience when you have a bad relationship with little to no respect. You cannot have solid obedience when your dog is overwhelmed and or has bad behavioral problems and responses. You first have to work on your relationship, build trust, have clear communication and create good habits. Then guide them through scenarios where they are filled with emotion, frustration, or stress and use obedience as a tool amongst other tools to teach them how to respond. #reactivedog #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #dogpsychology #balanceddogtrainer #balanceddogtraining #malinois #belgianmalinois #aggressivedog
