@theflowerhat: 1. Start seeds 6-8 weeks before transplanting. My current target date to get them in the ground is mid April. Because they’ll spend a significant amount of time in the trays, I like to use the deep 50-cell trays. If you’re only sprouting them for 3-4 weeks, a 72 tray or regular, shallower 50 cell tray will work just fine. Just make sure they don’t get root bound. 2. My soil mix recipe is: a 5 gal bucket of potting soil (@promixgardening is great, and also the one I can find locally. I don’t like to ship soil or heavy bags for the cost of it), 1 pint of worm castings, 1 pint of fertilizer. (I use @sustanefertilizer 8-2-4, but if you have a different one, it’ll work ok. I like this mix, it seems more forgiving and doesn’t burn the plants as much) 3. I make my map, calculate how many seeds I need, write my tags. Poke holes in the soil with your fingers. Place the tags in the tray, place one or two seeds per cell. Cover with soil and water. 4. The tray I showed here is not the sweet pea trays, but it’s the same process: cover with lid, place under fluorescent lights and pull the cover once the seeds sprout. No heat mat needed. 5. Pinch your plants when they’re 3-4” tall and watch them bush out. 6. Fertilize them with fish emulsion weekly weakly for the last 3-4 weeks before transplanting.
