Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) did not simply write about suffering—he was forged by it. Born into a troubled Russia, Dostoevsky lived through poverty, debt, epilepsy, and relentless emotional turmoil. In 1849, his involvement with a group discussing banned literature led to his arrest. He was sentenced to death and stood before a firing squad—only to receive a last-minute reprieve. The punishment was changed to years of hard labor in Siberia.
