The National Science Foundation is being actively dismantled at its roots. The organization accounts for over 25% of all federally supported research conducted in the United States & its funding is being slashed in new ways every single day. If you’re in STEM or STEM adjacent, chances are you or someone you know wouldn’t even have a career without NSF support. Graduate students & academics are being warned on the backend to be careful & pay close attention to fund allocations. Grants that have already been awarded are being rescinded based on the content of the research. This is not about budget cuts, this is about controlling information. While our institutions & the way we conduct science in America could stand for an overhaul, this is the exact opposite direction in which we should be headed. We should be moving towards more funding, open resources, program expansion, and strengthening accountability. If you’re not in STEM & wondering how this might affect you, trust me when I say the consequences are almost unthinkable. Climate science is taking a direct impact as the “banned terms” list literally includes the word “climate”. Researchers using these terms could have their projects shut down, their funding stripped, and almost no chance of publication in the US. One of the greatest threats to our species is being censored. A term called the “brain drain” is currently circulating around the academic sector. Essentially, the brightest minds & deepest thinkers in this country have had enough & are taking their talents elsewhere. While our country is moving towards censorship & misinformation, other countries are taking advantage of our missed opportunities. We are losing the people who matter most when it comes to scientific advancement & preventing young people from accessing the tools needed to replace them. #nsf #science #braindrain #nature #wildlife
