A lady in Kyoto asked me to have lunch with her randomly. She emails me to check in every few weeks.

all you literally have to do is go to a club and find the group that's having fun. stand near them and vibe for 5 seconds and you're magically best friends.

it was hard for me to make friends because i don’t drink and was too wiped from my job to join a reoccurring thing like a club or class… i did get along well with my students at least

I think making meaningful friendships is hard, plus the language barrier, and also the "tatamae" culture. I've been here for a long time and have friends, but most of it is surface level imo.

I do have Japanese friends but I just feel like making any new ones is impossible because everyone just never follows through or I have to initiate plans and plan every time. 😅

On my first trip to Japan I befriended everyone I could see… I still don’t know how because I have social anxiety and never leave the house in my own country 😀

It depends on which region I think. From what I know Kyoto is outwardly polite, but will expect you to take a "hint", which you're rude if you don't. Even Japanese people have difficulty with this.

I've found it so hard in Kyoto but so much easier in rural Japan. I'm on a 300 person island and have more friends than before in a million person city!

Niya in Kyoto :
I also think it depends what level of friendship you're seeking its not hard to get to know people and casually hang out because of tatemae culture they all act nice but deep ones are def hard
