@nobudgetbabe: I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion on this app, but having a big house or an expensive car does not tell me you're wealthy. Neither does a multi 6 figure salary. Why? Because true wealth is measured by the number of days you can survive without actively working. These "signs of wealth" in many cases are just bad financial decisions. If you make $100,000 a year, and drive a $150,000 car, that doesn't make you rich, that means you're likely living beyond your means. Real wealth isn't thousands of dollars in monthly debt payments, and if you spend every dollar you ever make on stuff, that means you have no money - this is the complete opposite of rich. I remember when the real estate market crashed in Toronto in 2017 and I was seeing dozens of multi million dollar homes in the "rich areas" all being foreclosed on by the banks. At the time I couldn't wrap my head around it - why was it the "rich people" who were all losing their homes? Because as these people made more, they upgraded their liabilities, aka the things they have to pay for every month, instead of their investments, aka the things that pay THEM. What good is a Rolex if it just tells you when your lunch break is over? This is why so many pro athletes and lottery winners go broke. This is why 40% of 6 figure earners live paycheck to paycheck even though they're in the top 10% of income earners. Capitalism doesn't want you to know that, because it's not good for the economy. So the messages we're shown from the time we're kids is that "wealth" is a bunch of things, but it's not - because when you have to keep going to work and selling your time to pay for them, you don't own those things, they own you.
