We tell my step son all the time that he doesn’t have to move out at 18, that he is more than welcome to stay with us as long as he needs or wants to. I moved out at 19 and it was so difficult.

16 is really young if parents do that it's typically around 18 and a lot of them save the money to give them when they are ready to move out

Never ever have known anyone who charged their children rent after they are adults if they still are living at home. Also I’ve been to Russia, the living environment is based on no one having money

I never had to pay rent to my parents and I moved out when I was ready. I could never make my kids pay rent either. They can live with me as long as they want/need.

I wonder if the adult family members share the load of the bills, house rent, groceries along with chores in a shared housing situation in Russia?

lots of reasons. privacy, independence, financial reasons, etc.. majority of families live close by but still have their own space and visit each other often.

yeah, never understood that, we've got 3 gens in our family under 1 roof. if I didn't live here, who'd take care of my grandma during the day? we all just add to the household finances for eveything

I don’t think it’s like that anymore because people can’t afford now . So kids are not moving out..

I lived with my parents until I was 27 and they never once asked me to pay rent. They even let my husband move in when we got married until we bought our own home.

Multi generational is great but I think it shouldn’t be on one family to pay for everyone. If kids stay there they should help out however they can.

I don’t agree, most of us live with our parents until we are financially stable or are in a serious relationship

Forcing our children to move out or pay rent is not the norm in America, either. I lived with my parents until I moved in with my husband and my kids will be able to stay as long as they want to.

USA motto is =" you pay were u lay/stay". it's probably because rent is expensive and having an extra body is extra use of utilities and will be more expensive

We have 3 adult children and with the current housing crisis they are all home, as long as they want to be. There is judgement from other family though.
