This isn’t a mirage; it’s the reality of Romania’s own sandy wonder, a stark reminder of nature’s raw power and its ability to reshape landscapes in the most unexpected places. Romania’s southern Oltenia region is home to several sandy expanses, such as the Oltenia Sahara, where the phenomenon of soil erosion has created desert-like conditions. This unusual landscape, spanning almost 100 hectares in some areas, owes its existence to a combination of natural and human-induced factors. Overgrazing by livestock, deforestation, and inappropriate agricultural practices have all contributed to the erosion of the topsoil, leading to the expansion of sandy areas. The fight against desertification in Oltenia involves a strategic, yet beautifully simple solution: tree planting. Trees play a crucial role in stabilizing the soil, reducing erosion, and gradually rebuilding the top layer of soil. Their roots hold the soil in place, while their canopy reduces the impact of raindrops on the surface, minimizing the washing away of fertile soil.
