Decartes just means that the only thing you can be certain of, is that if you think, then you are. You can make no other assumption with certainty besides that one.

That is not what was he was saying at all. He was saying the only thing we can truly know is real is our existence. Any other person could be in theory a dream or a simulation etc.

Descartes mention of “I” is secondary. His primary notion is that we are self existent. It is the first time we hear of any kind of inner consciousness. Ubuntu is not antithetical to this.
