This is Talaimannar Lighthouse and pier! I felt such a beautiful connection here 🫶 I later found out, after speaking to my grandad, he used this pier to travel to India when he was about 17!! How amazing is that?!? ❤️❤️❤️ very special to me :) Efforts to connect India and Sri Lanka by rail began as early as 1895. The pier was used since 1914 to transport workers from Tamil Nadu, India, to Sri Lanka to work on the tea plantations during the British ruling. The pier here was once the railroad that transported people to a ferry that would travel to India. It was considered the cheapest mode of transport for both people and of goods. In 1964, very strong winds known as a cyclone occurred and the natural disaster destroyed the lighthouse here as well as both the piers that connected India and Sri Lanka. Repairs were done three years later and continue to be used until 1983.
