depends on regs really and on the construction our attic room turned out to be atric storage as the floor was a ceiling we found this out after cracks appeared in bathroom tiles downstairs and

Building regs allows for steeper, alternating tread steps (space saver or loft steps) so long as they only serve a single room.

I needed a 3 bed, brought a 2 bed and converted the master in to 2 beds. The room went front to back. We built stud walls and created 2 new doors just inside the old entrance.
