Because a missile now can reach mach 20 so trying to make it faster. You will lose stability, maneuver and loot of things and that changed the game that more are focused in stealth and long range.

Also the modern Sidewinders & Sparrows can shoot down other jets from hundreds of miles away or what they refer to BVR or beyond visual range

during Vietnam war. US realized that pilots werent using those speed during dog fights. that's why the design changed over time
