@bdccarpenter: Replying to @Tik Toker “How did you get so fat?” On one hand, I hate videos like this. I can’t imagine a stranger on social media randomly asking someone that. On the other hand, I actually really love hearing people talk openly about things they struggle with. For example, there is a pervasive myth that obesity is an easy thing to get away from. Anyone who struggles is simply “lacking willpower” and told to “eat less, move more”. But people are silly sausages, and they often overlook the *reasons why* people eat more food in the first place. In this video, @599.to.damnshesfine talks about comfort eating from a young age, hiding and eating food in secret, and how her “addictive personality” often turned to things like shopping, gambling, drugs, or in this case, food. Now, the science of food addiction is a complicated beast, and that’s ok. What we can say with certainty is that many people feel addicted to food. They feel like it’s something they want to keep turning to even when they know it feels like it’s a slippery slope. When someone is struggling like this, imagine how patronising it can be for someone to come along and casually say “just eat less and move more”. Because if it was that easy to implement, everyone would be doing it already, right? P.S. My best-selling book, ‘Everything Fat Loss’ is currently on sale as a brand-new audiobook, plus digital/print versions from Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, Google, and Amazon with an extra 7% off in the UK, an extra 8% off in Canada and an extra 10% off in the USA. Feel free to grab it before the price goes up (Iink in profile). #addiction #addictionawareness #food #foodaddict #foodaddiction #weightloss #fatloss #weightlosstips #weightlossmyths #fatlosstips #fatlossmyths #obesity #weightstigma #caloriedeficit #exercise #gym #GymTok #FitTok #caloriesincaloriesout #foryou #fyp #fypシ

thank you! I try to explain it as an alcoholic that has to take a single shot 3 times a day at a bar, but has to have the mental strength every time to only have the single shot.

I was a kid who was denied food for days / weeks on end & malnourished. I think that made my brain seek food excessively ever since. I also hoard non perishable foods or I panic

I think it is OA that says “Abstinence in addiction is putting the tiger in cage. In food addiction, you have to take the tiger out for a walk three times a day”.

I have a pretty severe thyroid problem. Even when I was walking 7+ miles a day and eating only one meal a day I was gaining weight and not losing. Still can’t lose weight to save my life

So the best quote I read about food addiction is “with any other addiction, you can lock the tiger away, but with food, you have to let it out 3 times a day.”

I was recently told by my GP that food addiction is the best addiction to have. No, it really isn't! As you said you can't just give up food, you need it to survive!

Thank you. 🙏🏼 of course food addiction is the hardest. You have to make a hard choice multiple times a day. Willpower only goes so far

Someone very close to me deals with the opposite…trauma around food as an infant and toddler causes restriction. This person CANNOT eat more or they will spontaneously vomit. Underweight & struggling.

It's so weird that people feel entitled to ask such questions in the first place. Food gives energy, nutrition, life, comfort & escapism! The addiction is real & people's ignorance can be harmful!

your videos are so real, makes me realise my “ unhealthy “ habits with food are completely normal & withholding myself from eating doesn’t do anything but damage me more

THIS!! Thank you for speaking about this, so many people are ignorant of this topic & misguided in their "helpful" suggestions (or they resort to body-shaming, which makes it worse). You're a legend!
