What about fleas ? I have found that fleas lay their eggs in sand and multiply extremely fast and are eventually very difficult to eradicate

Shavings smell so much better, sand doesn't help with the smell, plus shavings keep the flies away and you don't have to clean out regularly. Just do the deep litter method!
