@hedgerow_healing: 🌱 Hawthorn Leaves 🌱 I need to get better at these "introducing a series" style videos, but for now you guys can have my regular format 😉 The hawthorn tree has many incredible health benefits, and is mostly used for a heart medicine. It's berries and flowers are renowned for their healing, and can help with many ailments. The hawthorn tree is also an incredibly significant tree amongst the UK and Ireland. Historically, this tree is thought to be a home of fairy dwellings and bad luck would come to you if you cut down a hawthorn tree. The blossoms also make an appearence during the Celtic festival of Beltane, an ancient spring festivals celebrating the fertility of the land and love. It is no wonder why hawthorn flowers are used during this festival, given their association with being a healer for the heart. The name "poor mans bread and cheese" was coined by those who live in the country as these leaves were said to be eaten by those during times of famine. Of course, they taste nothing like bread and cheese! However some people have ascribed the taste to be something similar to a nutty flavour. Hawthorn Leaves are largely overlooked, however they are fantastic for beginner foragers as the hawthorn tree is very recognisable, and the leaves are safe to eat, making great additions to springtime salads! . . . . #hawthorn #hawthorntree #hawthirnleaves #herbalism #herbalist #countrysidelaore #countryside #hedgewitch #wildwood #foodforaging #foraging #wildfoodforaging #celticmyths #treefolklore #treelore #ukforaging #fairytale #fairyfolk #fairyfolklore #farming #celticfolklore #beltane #celticfestivals #heartmedicine #naturalmedicine #naturalhealers #naturesecrets

Hawthorn blossom is called May blossom, the month it comes out. Hence the folk song: Here we go gathering knots of May (not nuts in May, as there aren’t any 😂).

It was also seen as bad luck to bring hawthorn into a house. That’s because the flowers have a decay-like stink, which was well known in a time when bodies would stick around for days after death

Cool. We have one we call Bob because I rejuvenated it and now it looks uncannily like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. We love it. Thanks for the info.
