This joke is so pivotal to understanding their relationship. Batman is the man who already made it across the building. Joker is the man who is too scared to cross. Batman’s offer is the beam of light. Joker saying it’s too late meaning. I don’t trust you to keep the light on and I can’t walk across that beam anyway. also that walking on light is impossible, so even if he did accept his help it wouldn't do anything anyway. It's hopeless

FOR THOSES WHO DONE UNDERSTAND THE JOKE The flashlight joke is the perfect metaphor for their lives. Batman is the guy jumping across the gap, offering a "beam of light" (his code, his help) for Joker to walk across. Joker refuses not because he isn't "crazy," but because he’s sane enough to know that the light isn't a solid bridge. He knows they are both falling, and a flashlight won't save them. So when he says "You’ll just turn it off when I'm halfway across." It’s Joker’s way of saying: "I can't be redeemed, and eventually, even your willpower will flicker out."

It’s about delusional vs reality. B and J laugh bc they realize subtly they are doing that same exchange. Batman offered to rehabilitate or help J but the joke points out how they are comparatively talking about using a light beam like a bridge which is impossible. They are so far delusional in their right with one another they completely miss the point in reality that a light beam can’t be a bridge let alone the issue with the person keeping the light on. It points to how trust has nothing to do with it, their fight has brought them so far out of tough with reality that they are talking basically talking about using a light beam as a bridge

so I think the joke is metaphor for joker's mistrust of help. he thinks Batsy would offer him help to make him vulnerable and then betray him. but also the fact that you can't walk on a light beam 😂

You know, its funny. This reminds me of a joke. See, there were two guys locked in a lunatic asylum and one night, one night they decided they didnt like that anymore. they decided to escape. So, they made it up to the roof and there just across this narrow gap, they see rooftops streching across town, streching to freedom. Now, the first guy he jumps right across , no problem but his friend.. No way, hes afraid of falling. So the first guy, he has an idea. He says "Hey, i got this flashlight with me. I'll shine it across the gap between the buildings and you can walk across the beam and join me!". But the second guy says "What do you think I am crazy? You'll just turn it off when I'm halfway across."
