Gallbladders in snakes is what carry their bile- which is green! When it begins to leak after death, that is what you notice coloring the underside of the snake "green". Does this necessarily mean the specimen has gone bad? No, while sometimes, the specimen IS too far gone, green belly can happen very quickly in snakes after death, and even sometimes during thawing. Because of the warm temps necessary in enclosures, the decomposition process starts very quickly in snakes and reptiles as opposed to other specimens. The bile that causes green belly happens in specimens that have eaten/built up bile to digest. That is why you don't commonly see hatchling specimens have this issue. They have not had the time to eat/form bile. I personally believe there is still the ability to salvage and find use for these specimens, though I know others don't always share this sentiment, but I love to salvage animals when I can. To understand this is to understand how formalin works- though formalin can't undue decomposition, it will arrest it in place, so it doesn't continue. One of my local university collections have specimens from roadkill pickup that have even been found with maggots 😵‍💫 talk about gross! That being said, a half eaten/rotted then fixed specimen, doesn't mean it makes a good/ valuable specimen for sale. There are several things to look out for if you think your snake with green belly is no good- but the biggest indicators for rot are slippage and bloating. Enjoy this specimen with green belly, that I gifted to a friend after several months of observation 💓 Joy likes it 😝
