Castlehill by @Ravikant Pandey is a short, steep narrow thoroughfare which forms the summit of Edinburgh’s historic highway: the Royal Mile. With its name recorded in text from 1487, the settlement is one of the oldest in the city. Over the centuries, Castlehill has played many different roles for the citizens of Edinburgh. From the 1500s it has been a place of residence as people chose to stay in close proximity to Edinburgh Castle for protection. It has also been a place of education, a site for processions, a hub of worship and entertainment, and even a source of clean drinking water. Castlehill was also the location in which hundreds of witches were once tried on a spot close to the Witches Well. Indeed more people were burned for witchcraft on Castlehill than anywhere else in Scotland. A simple ‘dooking’ test was devised to determine who was guilty by the banks of the Nor’ Loch. If, after dooking, you failed to perish by drowning, you were deemed without question to be guilty of witchery and would then be tried on the stake at Castlehill. Today Castlehill is one of the most popular areas to visit in Edinburgh, which is no surprise given the many historic buildings it contains. These include Castlehill School built in 1888 and now occupied by the Scotch Whisky Experience, home to the world’s largest collection of Scotch whisky. There is also Cannonball House, the Camera Obscura and Outlook Tower, the Hub and the Witchery restaurant. #edinburgh #scottish #Scotland #mood #history #education #scottishtiktok #fyp #foryoupage #witch #witchcraft #beautiful #travel #explorepage #magical #fy
