@ehranamibia: This is one of the most fascinating things to witness when in Namibia. ✨ The Welwitschia Mirabilis is an interesting plant native to the Namib desert in Namibia and Southern Angola. Discovered by Friedrich Welwitsch in 1859, it had been known by locals for much longer. They typically have two leaves that grow continuously and slowly, but can also have two pairs of leaves. Some specimens are estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,500 years old. In the Namib desert, water is primarily obtained through dew, as rainfall is infrequent. Welwitschia store water in their leaves rather than absorbing it, resulting in only 0.1% of their seeds successfully germinating. 🌱 Although not known for its beauty, Welwitschia is a significant symbol of endurance, survival, and perseverance in harsh environments. This is why it is featured on Namibia's national coat of arms. 🇳🇦 Have you ever spotted one before?
