Breh when water freezes it expands hence why ice floats

Cree Westerly :
Short answer: weight stays the same (conservation of mass), density changes (with water, ice is less dense, that’s why ice floats).

Ice weighs less, just weighed a frozen 16 oz bottle and a thawed 16 oz bottle
the ice bottle weighed 13.3 oz and the water weighed 18.15 oz

Ice is actually less dense then water🤓

Wouldn’t it gain the mass of moisture in the air that condenses and freezes to the outside?

Kiran Bhat :
Physical change vs chemical change. Water to ice is a physical change. Mass stays same

Water is unique. Ice is less dense, thats why it floats.

NO! Conservation of Matter. It just changes states and forms. It expands but the weight is the same

Same weight different volume. Atoms are in a latus structure when frozen and a dencer packed atomic structure when water.

the ice is lighter than the water

Alexander Groth :
The ice represents the air and water so ice is lighter because air is lighter than water. you're adding a negative and literally freezing that state and weighing it

João Alves :
Weight is always the same when frozen, in water’s case though density decreases whereas for most compounds, density increases

Density of some water is 1 kg/L. If you freeze the water then the volume, or L, increases but mass stays the same. Therefore a lower density but still the same mass

Das17 :
The structure that forms with water when it becomes ice is actually less dense. That’s why ice cubes float. This isn’t usually true though for other liquids.

A cubic foot of ice weighs less than a cubic foot of water because the water has to expand to freeze
