Field Notes: August 9, 2026 Location: Cataloochee Valley, Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina, United States ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Encounter Summary: A subscriber sent me this footage from a wet morning in Cataloochee, where the laurel holds the fog until noon. Della Whitcomb had gone out to photograph the branch mosses after rain and found that one of them was walking. She kept the camera steady for fifteen seconds, and at the end I hear her say, almost to herself, that the spider didn't even want him. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The animal is the length of a thumb and dressed entirely in living moss and short green bristles, six limbs on a narrow body, the head a burr of spines. It had been crawling low along the wood. Then it rose onto its hind pair, opened the other four into a six-pointed star, and stopped being an animal. A black orb weaver banded in orange came up the lower branch and passed within a limb's width of it. It hesitated there, turned, and went back the way it came. Only when the branch was empty did the star fold itself down and drop out of frame. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Old families in these coves call it the still-star, and they say it stands like that not for itself but for whoever is watching: a death walking the branch is shown a crossed shape and made to change its errand. Children are told to say nothing until it moves again. Della, who is not superstitious, said nothing until it moved again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am entering it as Stauromuscus vigilans. My guess is that the display is aimed at touch rather than at eyes. A hunting spider reads a branch through vibration and compact mass; spread across six anchor points, the still-star breaks its own outline and divides its weight so thinly that it registers as wood - not prey refusing to flee, but nothing at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ More at @olegpars7 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Made with @soraofficial ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cryptid #aiart #natgeo #fiction #openart
