As my (Grand)father's dementia progressed, with him unable to recognize his decline, he became more and more angry. I wanted so badly to continue being able to take him out to dinners and other trips outside of his memory care community, but, as his anger grew, so did his aggressive behavior. This video is a small snippet from a night where I tried taking him out to a nice dinner. I should have known when I picked him up that it wasn't going to go well - he was already triggered and looking for a fight - but I wanted so badly to give him a snippet of happiness that I took the chance. On the way there, he started to get more and more irate, verbally abusing me, arguing points that made no sense, and ultimately becoming physical. I started recording out of fear for what might happen. The evening escalated to him having a full blown panic attack with me parked on the side of the road, afraid to drive anywhere, feeling completely helpless. Eventually, I was able to calm him enough to get him back to his community where the facilitators converged not only to help him, but to offer me a hug that I hadn't realized how desperately I needed. Not everyone's loved ones experience this type of aggression from dementia - my (Grand)father also suffered from bipolar disorder which complicated everything so much more. On this day, relatively early in his decline, I was still trying to argue logic with someone who was no longer capable of understanding practicalities. I ultimately learned that the most important and effective thing I could do was to simply reassure him that I loved him and that I would be there for him no matter what.
