@polymathematic: I think i understand where @Kyle Hill is coming from, but it doesn’t strike me as quite right to say that the “eclipse” happens when the light leaves from the sun rather than when it’s blocked by the moon.
You know what’s super cool, is because the shadow is not a real object, it can actually move faster than the speed of light.

The moon is not as far away as the sun is (citation needed).

Relativity says that observers can disagree about the order of events and whether they were simultaneous. From our reference frame, the event happened when it happened!

But it was an 8min old sun getting blocked.. so 8min old Corona, Yeah? 1min old moon. What’s the eclipse the halo or the black dot? 🤔

I imagine that you can call the eclipse the alignment of the 3 bodies but that would have just been one instant globally

the eclipse is defined as the shadow striking the Earth, the moon always casts a shadow....

If it's not when the shadow hits the earth, I wouldn't know how to even define what an eclipse is

I feel like it's not unfair to say that the shadow itself that were seeing is the eclipse. it's a combined interaction of distant objecting lining up to cause a phenomenon farther down the line, here
