The pressure increases and begins damaging the optic nerve, the “cable” that sends visual information from the eye to the brain. Once that nerve is damaged, vision loss is permanent. In Jack’s case, by the time the glaucoma was diagnosed, he had already lost all vision in the affected eye. On top of that, the swelling and pressure from it was causing discomfort and could lead to other complications like chronic pain, eye infections, and even damage to surrounding tissues. Keeping the blind eye might sound less invasive at first, but in reality, it would have meant ongoing pain management, frequent medical care, and the risk of the condition worsening. Removing the eye eliminated the constant pressure, stopped the pain, and removed the risk of further complications, giving Jack a far more comfortable, healthy life going forward.
