They don’t need any supports or plans at school.” 😩Have you heard this one before. 💡First keep in mind that many kids with ADHD can get good grades AND be struggling academically. Your teacher might provide accommodations in class to support your child without a plan in place, which can make them look more successful than they would be without that help. If those accommodations are working, great! But we still recommend putting them in a formal plan. 💡Second, many kids with ADHD are smart and DO get good grades. So you might hear, “When they actually complete their assignments they do well. They just need to stay in their seat, focus, and get their work done.” 💡But for kids with ADHD, the hard part is NOT the actual schoolwork. The hard part is staying in their seat, regulating their attention, and starting their classwork (alllllll those executing functioning skills!). And without supports or a plan at school, they struggle to get work done. This can have a negative impact on their learning and progress in school.   📚 According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities (2017), a staggering 1 in 5 children in the US have a learning or attention difference. Yet, only a small portion of these children are formally identified through the public school and supported with an IEP or 504 Plan.
