I teach my kids that there are different ways to greet people and family, like a wave, hi five or just saying hi. That way they learn to be polite, but there’s no obligation for hugs and kisses.

I always ask before hugging my nieces or nephews. if they don't want to I don't force it. they'll give me fist bumps instead. I was sa as a kid so I'm really big on kids being able to say no to people

I’m so glad my parents say “that’s ok. You don’t have to if you don’t want to this time” unlike my in laws who think it’s disrespectful not to hug every time.

My dad ridiculed me to "Just GIVE THEM A HUG" when I was uncomfortable. it took me 20 yrs to find power in my "No" again. I will never extinguish my daughter's power in her voice.

I love the personal reinforcement at the end. A lot of kids might feel like they are in trouble if another adult is upset so they need that extra assurance that it’s ok to say no
